End of Life for MyCourses SMS Notifications

MyCourses SMS Notifications will be deprecated by our Learning Management System (LMS) vendor, D2L, in July 2024.

FAQ

What are SMS Notifications?

SMS (Short Message Service) Notifications allow users to subscribe to select alert bell notifications so that they are forwarded to a mobile phone number.

Why are SMS Notifications going away?

When D2L originally built SMS Notifications, smartphones were not the norm. D2L built the SMS Notifications feature using a technology service available from most cellular providers, email to SMS. This service is being deprecated by cellular providers. Now users are experiencing inconsistent delivery times and large-scale outages at some of the largest mobile providers in North America.

How can I get mobile push notifications without SMS?

Another difference from when D2L built the SMS Notifications feature is that the Brightspace Pulse mobile app was not available. With the Brightspace Pulse app, users can receive the same mobile push notifications that were available with SMS Notifications.

Our email-based notifications are not going away, so users can still receive email notifications if subscribed.

What will happen to my stored phone number?

Personal Data will be deleted once it is no longer needed to send notifications.

Alternative mobile notification option

Information Technology (IT) recommends downloading and installing the Brightspace Pulse mobile app to ensure uninterrupted delivery of MyCourses notifications.
